Chapter 6 - WHAT WALTER DID

Walter was arrested the following morning.

He did not resist. Prosecutors were reviewing his decision to confine Ava in the wolf enclosure, his failure to report her immediately and his statements about the caretaker cabin. Nathan felt no satisfaction watching him leave the station. Walter had been frightened and wrong, but he was also the person who kept Ava at Blackridge long enough for Nathan to find her instead of letting Owen’s transport crew collect her.

Mara separated those facts.

Walter’s choices could be examined without turning him into either a monster or a hero.

Under questioning, Walter admitted something he had concealed. June called him four days before her stroke. She sounded confused, said Owen was demanding “the girl” be moved and asked Walter whether the old veterinary corridor was still accessible. Walter understood more than he wanted to admit because he recognized the language.

He asked whether she meant Ava Moreno.

June began crying.

Walter did not call police.

Instead, he drove toward Rockford the next morning. Before he arrived, June was hospitalized. Her neighbor told him two men had collected a child from the property under instructions from a family representative. Walter returned to Blackridge because he knew Owen used the abandoned park for equipment storage.

He found Ava in the caretaker cabin.

She recognized him from photographs June kept.

Walter tried to call Nathan, then heard a vehicle approaching through the service road. He moved Ava into the wolf enclosure because the steel veterinary building was chained and the enclosure offered a second exit through a maintenance gate. He locked the main gate to slow anyone arriving from the road.

The decision was reckless.

But the timeline was supported by cameras.

Walter had kept Ava in the enclosure for thirty-seven minutes before Nathan appeared.

The second consequence came from the county. Pike was suspended after the photograph and Erin’s preserved messages became public. His attorney argued that he had conducted a confidential rescue operation and that releasing the details earlier would have endangered Ava. Mara requested his private case notes.

Pike produced none.

He claimed they were stored on an encrypted work device that failed during a department technology migration.

IT records contradicted him.

The device was wiped using his administrator credentials three months after Ava vanished.

The third consequence struck Nathan personally. Blackridge’s buyer suspended the land transaction after news of Ava’s rescue. A representative called Nathan’s inspection firm and warned that his involvement in the criminal investigation could compromise his independent assessment.

Nathan resigned from the property survey rather than allow anyone to argue that his inspection served a personal vendetta.

Then he requested all records connected to the old gate investigation.

He wanted his name cleared.

More importantly, he wanted to know why Owen selected him as the person whose alleged mistake explained a missing child.

The answer came from the original night-shift roster.

Nathan had been scheduled to inspect the veterinary service door the evening Ava vanished.

Owen canceled the inspection personally.

Reason: private animal transfer.

Nathan stared at the note.

“What animal transfer?”

The roster contained one handwritten entry beneath it.

WOLF 06 — HOLD INSIDE.

That number did not belong to any wolf Nathan remembered.

The missing girl was not the only thing Owen hid behind the veterinary door that night.
