Chapter 13 - THE GREEN COAT

Helen Voss had maintained a reputation as Blackridge’s most responsible board member. A retired attorney and longtime conservation donor, she publicly criticized park management after Ava disappeared and later oversaw the difficult decision to close the facility. Owen described her as the person who forced transparency upon an organization struggling with public trust.

Now Mara had evidence Helen was at the veterinary loading bay before the disappearance became public.

The green coat alone was not enough.

Nathan found the supporting record.

A visitor-access log placed Helen inside Blackridge at 10:37 p.m., fifteen minutes after the first fire-alarm-style security notification from the veterinary corridor. Owen’s public timeline claimed she was at a fundraiser in downtown Chicago until midnight.

Her driver’s records showed otherwise.

Helen’s first explanation was that Owen called her about a serious internal employee dispute and she came to prevent the situation escalating. She claimed she did not know Ava was being transported until after the van left.

Mara showed her the cached video frame.

Helen was visible beside the loading bay while Ava was led into the vehicle.

Her story changed.

She admitted knowing the child was being moved but claimed Owen and Pike told her it was a protective placement authorized by Erin.

The first major reward came from Helen’s own messages. She wrote to Owen the following morning:

No child should be part of this. Return her as soon as Erin signs.

That sentence proved she knew the child’s movement was tied to Erin’s agreement, not ordinary protection.

The second reward came from later messages.

Two months afterward, Helen asked for proof Ava remained alive. Owen sent her a photograph taken at June’s farmhouse.

Helen did not report it.

She allowed the arrangement to continue while working publicly on Blackridge’s closure.

The larger financial motive finally became complete. Helen’s investment group had a contingent interest in the developer buying the parkland. Owen controlled the operational fraud; Helen protected the asset transaction. Pike controlled the investigation; Caleb handled movement; June maintained the false household.

Each person had a different reason to keep Ava hidden.

The child suffered one continuous result.

The final evidence came from North Valley’s financial server, recovered after Caleb began cooperating. It contained a transport plan prepared two days before Walter found Ava.

MOVE SUBJECT M. HARLOW FROM JUNE LOCATION TO BLACKRIDGE HOLDING.

SECONDARY DESTINATION: OUT-OF-STATE RESIDENTIAL PLACEMENT.

The plan included a new identity packet.

Different surname.

Different birth date.

Another disappearance.

The parkland sale was not merely erasing the evidence room.

It was the deadline after which Owen intended to remove Ava from the people who still knew her as Molly.

Walter’s intervention prevented the transfer from being completed.

Nathan found her while the second move was still underway.

The chapter ended with Mara presenting Helen’s messages to the attorney general.

The prosecution no longer depended on one frightened child remembering a face.

It had transport records, payments, original video, false medical documentation and communications tying the decision-makers together.

What began as one child behind a wolf fence had become a documented conspiracy to conceal her while converting charitable property into private wealth.

Now they could tell the full story without asking Ava to carry all of it alone.
