Chapter 5 - The Black Evidence Folder

Before returning home, I had created a secure folder on my phone.
Grace called it the black folder because of its plain dark icon.
Inside were photographs, security timestamps, household expense records, and copies of messages Ethan accidentally synchronized to an old tablet.
Until that evening, the evidence suggested infidelity and misuse of staff.
The recording transformed it into something larger.
Ethan had been preparing a foundation restructuring package for months.
He told me it would simplify grant approvals.
Buried inside were clauses transferring broad administrative power over real estate and investment accounts to an executive committee.
Ethan had selected every proposed committee member.
Two were business associates.
One was Vanessa.
Her title in the documents was strategic communications consultant.
The papers also contained electronic approvals attributed to me.
I had never signed them.
Ethan planned to present the final pages during a board dinner, surrounded by people who assumed I already understood the details.
The mansion would remain legally inside the trust, but management authority would shift to Ethan’s committee.
He would control access, staffing, leases, and occupancy.
He could not sell the house outright.
He could make it impossible for me to live there.
When he told Vanessa, “This house is yours now,” he was not speaking romantically.
He was describing a transaction.
