Chapter 1 - Clean This Up

Vanessa snapped her fingers at me and pushed an empty wineglass toward my chest.
“Clean this up.”
She was barefoot in my living room.
Wearing my pink satin robe.
The robe Ethan had given me on our eighth anniversary.
I stood beside a cleaning cart in a gray housekeeper’s uniform, one hand gripping the metal handle so tightly my fingers ached.
My husband stood behind her with one arm around her waist.
Ethan Carter looked relaxed.
Happy.
He kissed Vanessa’s temple, lifted his wineglass, and smiled with the same warmth he displayed whenever photographers caught us together at charity events.
“Relax,” he told her. “This house is yours now.”
Something inside me went silent.
Not broken.
Silent.
My eyes moved from Vanessa’s robe to Ethan’s wedding ring.
Then to the framed photograph behind them.
Ethan and I stood beneath the same chandelier, smiling on our tenth anniversary.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Didn’t you hear me?”
She pushed the glass toward me again.
I did not take it.
Instead, I reached beneath a folded towel on the cart and activated the recorder on my phone.
Ethan’s smile began to fade.
I slowly removed the maid’s name badge and placed it on the cart.
Then I straightened my back.
“I heard everything.”
Ethan went still.
Vanessa looked between us.
I stepped out from behind the cart and held the phone at chest height.
Ethan nearly dropped his wine.
“Evelyn?”
Vanessa looked down at the robe.
For the first time that evening, she understood she was not ordering a servant.
She was ordering the woman whose home she had already begun claiming.
I walked past them toward the staircase.
At the first step, I stopped.
“Enjoy your last night here.”
Behind me, Ethan’s breathing changed.
May you like
He knew the affair was exposed.
What he did not know was that the recording had captured the final evidence I needed to expose everything else.
