Chapter 8 - WHAT VANESSA KNEW

Vanessa requested another interview after investigators obtained Claire’s emails.
Her first account—that Charles hired her only after Claire’s death—could no longer stand. She admitted working for him earlier but insisted she believed the assignments were ordinary event and family-office services.
Then detectives showed her the photograph Claire marked.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“She saw me?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked down.
The midpoint reversal came through her explanation.
Claire confronted Vanessa at the foundation event and asked why she was attending closed meetings concerning Lily’s trust. Vanessa told her Charles hired her to support the family during the anticipated medical transition.
Claire accused her of gathering information about Richard.
Vanessa denied it.
At that time, she had not yet met him socially.
She knew who he was.
She had reviewed his schedule, public appearances and family situation for Charles’s office.
The eventual introduction was planned.
Vanessa’s emotional attachment to Richard might have become real.
Her access was never accidental.
Then she admitted something more damaging.
Charles told her that Claire’s trust made the Whitmore sale unnecessarily complicated and that Richard would not challenge a recommendation presented as medical or family-care advice.
“He said Richard would sign if he thought it helped Lily.”
Richard heard that sentence later from Rebecca.
It stayed with him.
His brother did not need to convince him with money.
He needed to make the decision sound protective.
The second revelation concerned Vanessa’s conduct toward Lily.
She did not admit intending to kill the baby.
She said she wanted Richard to recognize that Lily needed more experienced care than he could provide.
When investigators asked why dropping a toddler toward marble would demonstrate that, Vanessa claimed she expected Anna to catch her.
The explanation was horrifying because it reduced Lily’s safety to a staged demonstration.
She wanted a frightening incident.
She believed another adult would prevent permanent harm.
But the only reason Anna caught Lily was that she reacted quickly enough.
No one could guarantee that outcome.
Vanessa had made an infant the center of a plan whose success depended on frightening her father.
The chapter’s late complication came from her accusation against Charles.
She claimed he told her the guardianship paperwork would be used only after a genuine incident and that she should not invent one.
She said her desperation grew when Havenwell refused to support placement.
That did not excuse the act.
It complicated responsibility.
Charles created the financial incentive and supplied the documents.
Vanessa chose the dangerous action.
The final revelation came from an encrypted message recovered from her phone.
Three hours before Richard arrived, Vanessa wrote to Charles:
Anna is watching me. I can’t do this while she stays here.
Charles replied:
Then remove Anna from the picture. We need the incident documented before Friday.
Richard stared at the message.

His brother knew an incident was being planned.
And he wanted the one adult protecting Lily removed before it happened.
