Chapter 14 - THE PRICE OF PROTECTION

The legal cases took longer than Richard wanted.
Vanessa faced charges related to child endangerment and false documentation. Her lawyers disputed intent to cause serious injury and emphasized that Lily was caught before striking the floor. Prosecutors argued that releasing a fifteen-month-old over marble created obvious danger regardless of Vanessa’s claim that someone else would intervene.
Charles’s case focused on financial conflicts, falsified documents and efforts to obtain authority through manufactured caregiving concerns. He denied conspiring to injure Lily and maintained that his messages referred only to creating legitimate evidence for court.
The proceedings were separate for a reason.
Vanessa chose the act.
Charles created the financial plan and helped build the false paper trail.
Each person’s responsibility depended on what could be proven.
The Whitmore financial review produced its own consequences. Charles’s firm lost its position in the proposed acquisition and entered restructuring after lenders enforced guarantees. Richard did not rescue it with Lily’s trust.
That decision divided the Ashford family.
Some relatives argued Charles made a terrible mistake while trying to protect the business.
Others believed Richard should have intervened earlier.
Richard accepted neither the demand for vengeance nor the demand for immediate forgiveness.
He attended the necessary hearings.
He provided evidence.
He returned home to Lily.
That became the center of his life rather than the public conflict.
The emotional climax came when Charles requested a private conversation.
They met with attorneys nearby.
Charles looked exhausted.
“You have no idea what I carried after Claire died.”
“I know you carried a lot.”
“I kept your life functioning.”
“Yes.”
“You would have lost everything without me.”
Richard considered the claim.
“Maybe I would have lost parts of the business.”
Charles shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
“No,” Richard said. “I understand now.”
He leaned forward.
“You decided Lily’s safety was something you could manage as part of a financial transaction.”
Charles looked away.
“I never wanted her hurt.”
“Then you should have stopped when Vanessa said Anna was watching.”
Charles said nothing.
Richard continued.
“You could have called me. You could have removed Vanessa from the house. You could have told me the truth about the deal. You did none of those things because you needed an incident.”
The words remained between them.
Charles finally whispered, “I thought Anna would protect her.”
Richard felt the full horror of the sentence.
His brother had relied on the woman he tried to discredit to prevent the consequence of a plan he continued supporting.
“That is not protection,” Richard said.
Charles lowered his head.
The chapter ended not with reconciliation but with a boundary.
Richard stood.

“You do not get to make decisions about my daughter again.”
Then he left.
