Chapter 8 - MIDNIGHT IN MIAMI

My mother called at 12:17 AM.

The New Year had begun twelve minutes earlier. Music and cheering filled the background, but Eleanor was not celebrating anymore. I had frozen every authorized card while riding to the hospital. The resort had declined her payment for a private dinner.

“What did you do?” she demanded.

“Where are Maya’s antibiotics?”

Silence.

“You frightened everyone by returning without warning,” she said. “Maya has clearly filled your head with—”

“Where are the antibiotics?”

“She didn’t need something that strong.”

“You are not her doctor.”

“I raised two children. I know more than some twenty-five-year-old resident.”

“You hid prescribed medication from a woman recovering from surgery.”

“I was helping her.”

“You took the food.”

“We paid for it with the card you gave us.”

“The card was for Maya and Liam.”

“We are your family too.”

That sentence explained everything Eleanor believed. If my money entered her hands, it became hers. If my wife occupied space in my life, she was taking something from my mother. Even my son had already become an object Eleanor imagined she could claim.

I opened the nursery recording and sent her a still image of Chloe arranging dirty bottles around Maya’s sleeping body.

The music behind Eleanor seemed to disappear.

“You recorded us?”

“No. You recorded yourselves.”

Her voice became quieter.

“David, you don’t understand. That woman was going to cut us off.”

“My wife asked me to stop financing adults who treat her like an enemy.”

“After everything I sacrificed for you?”

“You don’t get to collect from my wife and child.”

Eleanor began crying. It was a sound that had controlled me since childhood. This time, I heard the precision inside it.

“Come home,” I said. “But don’t go to the apartment. The locks have been changed.”

“What are you saying?”

“I filed a police report.”

The line went silent.

Then Chloe grabbed the phone.

“You called the police on your own mother?”

“No,” I said. “I reported three adults who stole medication, food, money, and baby supplies from a recovering woman, disabled the heat, and staged evidence to take her child.”

Mark shouted something in the background about returning the groceries.

I ended the call.

Some things cannot be returned once the intention behind them has been exposed.
