Chapter 7 - THE CAMERA THEY FORGOT

After Maya and Liam were stable, I returned to the apartment with a building security manager and two officers.

I had already saved the footage showing my family removing the food and lowering the temperature. I believed that was the full betrayal.

It was not.

The apartment camera stored only seven days of video, but the building’s hallway system retained thirty. The security manager found repeated footage of Mark carrying groceries and baby supplies out of our unit. Chloe removed sealed packages addressed to Maya. Eleanor escorted a home health nurse away before the woman ever reached our door.

“She canceled the visits,” the nurse later confirmed. “She said Mrs. Sullivan had hired private care.”

No private care had been hired.

The most disturbing footage came from a smaller camera inside the nursery. I had installed it months earlier to test the baby monitor system, then forgotten it continued uploading clips to cloud storage.

Four nights after Maya came home from surgery, Eleanor entered the nursery with Chloe. Maya was asleep in a chair beside Liam’s crib, exhausted after feeding him.

Chloe took several photographs.

“Make sure the bottles are in the frame,” Eleanor said.

“What are these for?”

“In case David needs proof that she can’t handle the baby.”

Chloe moved dirty laundry beside the chair and placed two empty glasses on the table.

Then Eleanor said, “Once he sees how unstable she is, he’ll bring Liam to me. Maya can go back to whatever life she had before she trapped him.”

I watched the clip three times because my mind refused to accept what my ears understood.

This had never been simple neglect.

My mother had been manufacturing evidence.

She planned to use Maya’s surgical exhaustion, the mess Eleanor helped create, and the shortages they caused to portray my wife as an unfit mother. Chloe and Mark supported her because Maya had recently asked me to remove their access to our accounts once the baby was born.

They were not only afraid of losing money.

They were trying to remove the person who had finally asked me to stop funding them.

When an officer asked whether I wanted to file a formal report, I looked at the empty nursery and imagined Eleanor lifting Liam from it after convincing me Maya was dangerous.

“Yes,” I said.

Then I gave him every recording.
