Chapter 7 - THE ACCOUNT CHANGE
The bank issue turned out to be less dramatic than Alex initially feared and more revealing than he expected.
Evelyn had not stolen the condo.
She had not emptied accounts.
She did not possess magical authority over their finances.
She had attempted something simpler.
Alex maintained an older savings account from before his marriage. Years ago, after his father died, he added Evelyn as a limited transfer contact because she helped settle part of the estate.
He forgot she still had that access.
During the two weeks she stayed at the condo, Evelyn contacted the bank and attempted to move $18,000 from that savings account into an account she controlled.
When questioned, she described the transfer as family support previously authorized by Alex.
The bank paused it and mailed verification.
Evelyn intercepted the letter.
Then a representative emailed Alex.
The message landed in an account he used mostly for old financial notices and did not see during the trip.
The transfer never occurred.
But the attempt explained why Evelyn had become obsessed with the mail.
“What was the money for?” Alex asked.
She stared at him.
“Your sister.”
Alex closed his eyes.
Of course.
His younger sister Natalie had accumulated significant credit-card debt after opening a boutique that failed.
Evelyn had been paying it quietly.
Now she needed more.
“You could have asked me.”
“You would have said no.”
“Yes.”
“That money came from your father.”
“It came to me.”
“Family money stays in the family.”
Alex almost laughed.
“Maya and Chloe are my family.”
Evelyn’s expression tightened.
That was the real dividing line.
In her mind, marriage had added Maya to Alex’s life.
It had not replaced the hierarchy.
Evelyn still believed she, Natalie and Alex formed the real family.
Maya and Chloe belonged only when they behaved correctly.
The condo dinners.
The locked pantry.
The custody research.
The humiliating photographs.
The attempt to control money.
They all came from the same belief.
If Maya could be made to look incompetent enough, Alex would return emotionally to the structure Evelyn understood.
Son.
Mother.
