Chapter 3 - WHAT ALEX HEARD ON THE PHONE

Alex called every night.
He thought everything was normal.
That was the part Maya later found hardest to explain.
How could abuse happen inside a condo while the husband called from a hotel room every evening?
Because nobody told the same story.
When Alex called Maya, Evelyn remained close enough to hear.
If Maya sounded tired, Evelyn mouthed:
Don’t start.
If Maya tried to mention conflict, Chloe would appear in the doorway and Evelyn would announce bedtime or ask some urgent question.
Maya became ashamed of how powerless the situation sounded.
So she kept saying:
“We’re okay.”
Meanwhile Evelyn called Alex separately.
“She’s exhausted.”
“She forgot to pay the grocery delivery.”
“The condo is becoming a mess.”
“Chloe is acting out because there’s no structure.”
Alex defended Maya.
At first.
“Mom, she cut her hand.”
“I know. I’m helping.”
“Don’t overdo it.”
“I’m not.”
Then Evelyn started sending photographs.
A sink full of dishes.
Laundry on the sofa.
Toys on the floor.
Chloe eating cereal at ten in the morning.
All normal moments.
Framed carefully.
Alex began asking Maya questions he thought were gentle.
“Are you sleeping enough?”
“Do you need me to have groceries delivered?”
“Mom says you’ve been overwhelmed.”
Maya heard only one thing.
He believes her.
Alex heard something different.
I’m checking on the woman I love.
May you like
Evelyn understood both interpretations.
She lived in the space between them.
