Chapter 8 - WHAT WAS IN THE SAFE

Benjamin had overlooked one folder.
It sat beneath Catherine’s father’s estate papers.
Inside were copies of the premarital financial disclosures Benjamin himself signed.
One page listed the Bethesda house specifically.
Property owner:
Catherine Mercer.
Estimated equity at marriage:
$816,000.
Separate property acknowledged by Benjamin Mercer.
His signature appeared beneath it.
Dated three weeks before the wedding.
There was also a later post-marital acknowledgment signed when Catherine refinanced the original mortgage at a better rate.
Again:
Benjamin waived any claim arising solely from the refinance.
Grace read both documents.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“This was not confusion.”
“No.”
“He was trying to manufacture leverage.”
Catherine thought about the way he grabbed her arm.
“This is my house too.”
He had said it with such confidence.
Perhaps he had repeated the lie enough to believe the version he needed.
Then another document surfaced.
The page that had fallen beside the toddler during the confrontation was part of a larger payment package.
At the bottom was an account summary.
Margot Hale.
Dependent support.
Two initials appeared beside each transfer.
BM.
Benjamin Mercer.
Grace traced the source file to a financial-planning spreadsheet Benjamin had created.
Inside were projected monthly costs for:
M + C1 + C2.
Margot.
Child one.
Child two.
There was also a final column.
Post-transition housing: Bethesda.

The first projected date was three months earlier.
Benjamin had been planning to move them into Catherine’s home long before that Saturday.
