Chapter 7 - The Farmhouse Becomes Theirs Again

Jessica and Susan left that evening.

Brooke went with them after giving a full statement and surrendering copies of messages discussing the forged document.

The financial investigation took months.

Jessica argued that many withdrawals were compensation for caregiving. Records showed she had already used Arthur and Helen’s retirement funds to pay herself and Susan while also using Ethan’s transfers for personal expenses.

The forged property claim was withdrawn.

Restitution became part of the eventual settlement.

Ethan did not remain angry every hour.

Some days, he was simply ashamed.

He had worked himself to exhaustion to provide a house, then stayed away long enough for someone else to take control of the life inside it.

Arthur refused to let him carry all of that blame.

“We told you we were fine.”

“Because she stood beside you during every call.”

“Because I was embarrassed.”

Ethan looked at him.

“About what?”

“That my own son bought me a home, and I still let someone make me feel homeless inside it.”

Ethan moved back to Tennessee temporarily.

He restored the master bedroom for his parents. Helen chose pale blue curtains. Arthur insisted on bringing his old recliner back from the barn where Jessica had stored it beneath tarps.

A licensed care worker began visiting three mornings a week, paid directly through an account Jessica could never access.

Ethan installed cameras at the exterior doors, not to watch his parents, but so no one could isolate them again.

The rear cottage became a small rental. Every dollar went into a protected fund for Arthur and Helen.

On the first cool evening of fall, Ethan found his father sitting on the porch with iced tea.

The broom leaned unused against the wall.

Arthur nodded toward the empty chair beside him.

“Sit down. You’ve worked enough.”

Ethan did.

For years, he believed buying the farmhouse was the sacrifice that would save his parents.

He had been wrong.

Money could purchase land, walls, and security.

It could not replace presence.

The farmhouse finally became the home Ethan intended only after his parents were no longer expected to earn their place inside it.
