Chapter 6 - The Father Who Stayed Quiet

Sheriff Daniels arrived before sunset.
Ethan did not call him to stage a public humiliation. His attorney advised preserving the forged document and preventing anyone from removing financial records or property.
Jessica spoke first.
She claimed Ethan had abandoned his parents and verbally promised Caleb the farmhouse.
Susan insisted Arthur and Helen were incapable of managing the property.
Brooke remained silent on the porch.
Sheriff Daniels asked Arthur where he wanted to live.
Arthur looked frightened by the question.
Jessica answered for him.
“This is his home.”
The sheriff held up one hand.
“I asked Mr. Walker.”
Arthur stared at the gravel.
Ethan waited.
Finally, his father said, “I want to stay here with my wife.”
Jessica relaxed.
Then Arthur continued.
“But I want them gone.”
Helen covered her mouth.
Susan’s face hardened.
“You ungrateful old man.”
Arthur looked at her.
The years seemed to fall from his voice.
“My son bought this house so Helen and I could rest. You made us afraid to use our own kitchen.”
Brooke stood.
“I told Jessica this had gone too far.”
Jessica spun toward her.
“Be quiet.”
Brooke began crying.
She admitted Jessica had forged Ethan’s signature using a scanned contract he emailed years earlier. Susan knew. Brooke had been pressured to witness the false agreement but refused.
The forged application had not yet transferred anything.
But it proved intent.
Sheriff Daniels looked toward Jessica.
“You need to pack essentials. The rest can be collected through a scheduled civil standby.”
Jessica stared at Ethan.
“You would throw out Caleb’s widow?”
May you like
Ethan’s voice remained controlled.
“You threw my parents out of their own lives.”
