Chapter 9 - The Collapse

The ballroom descended into complete, unadulterated chaos.

Reporters swarmed the stage, their flashbulbs creating a blinding storm of white light. Political guests rushed toward the emergency exits, desperate to disassociate themselves from the disgraced Vale family before the press captured their faces.

At the bottom of the stage, four uniformed federal agents pushed through the chaotic crowd, led by a tall man in a dark trench coat carrying a federal warrant.

“Camille Vale! Adrian Vale!” the lead agent shouted over the noise, unholstering a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit tax evasion, and money laundering!”

Adrian tried to run toward the service exit behind the kitchen doors, but Marco stepped into his path, throwing his heavy shoulder forward and shoving Adrian back into the arms of two federal agents.

The steel cuffs snapped tightly around Adrian’s wrists with a sharp, final CLICK.

“Elena! Please!” Adrian screamed as he was forced down onto his knees on the parquet floor, his face pressed against the ruined silk of the carpet. “Elena! Talk to them! Tell them it was my mother! I didn't know! I love you, Elena! I’ve always loved you!”

I walked to the edge of the stage, standing directly above him, looking down at his weeping, humiliated face with absolute, unyielding coldness.

“You never loved me, Adrian,” I said softly, my voice carrying clearly through the dying noise of the room. “You loved what you thought you could take from me. But you forgot one thing.”

I leaned down slightly, my eyes locking onto his.

“I count every cent.”

The federal agents pulled Adrian and Camille up from the floor, dragging them out through the main doors of the ballroom while cameras filmed every single second of their public downfall.

I stood on the stage, the bright spotlights illuminating my crimson dress and the diamonds around my neck.

Lucian walked up the steps, stopping right beside me. He didn't look at the press, he didn't look at the police, and he didn't look at the ruined Vales.

He looked only at me.

He reached out, taking my hand in his, and raised my fingers to his lips, kissing my knuckles with slow, deep, and dangerous devotion.

“A masterclass, my sweet,” Lucian whispered, his dark eyes glowing with pure admiration. “You didn't just strike the match. You burned the whole world down.”
