Chapter 8 - The Screen Goes Live

Instead of the glossy, orchestral charity video showcasing orphanages and medical clinics, the forty-foot LED screen lit up with a high-definition spreadsheet.
It was the master ledger of Vanguard Holdings.
In massive, bold black letters, the screen displayed three thousand individual transaction records detailing millions of dollars moved from the charity’s bank accounts directly into private offshore shell accounts, political bribe funds, and luxury real estate purchases in the Cayman Islands.
At the very top of the screen, displayed in flashing red text, were two names listed as primary beneficial owners:
CAMILLE VALE & ADRIAN VALE
A collective, deafening gasp ripped through the four hundred guests in the ballroom.
Senators dropped their glasses. Business executives pulled out their phones. The Mayor took two steps back from the stage, his face turning dark with shock.
“What is this?!” Camille screamed into the microphone, turning around in absolute horror to look at the massive screen behind her. “Shut it off! Technician! Shut it off right now!”
The technician in the booth pushed buttons frantically, but his console was completely locked out, overridden by a remote signal sent directly from the laptop sitting in Lucian’s Maybach outside.
I stepped out from the crowd, walking slowly, deliberately up the steps of the main stage.
My red silk train glided over the stairs, my Moretti diamonds catching the stage spotlights, blinding the photographers who were now frantically snapping photos of the screen and the stage.
I took the microphone directly out of Camille’s shaking, weak hands.
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” I spoke into the microphone, my voice smooth, confident, and echoing with absolute authority through every speaker in the room. “For those of you who don't know me, my name is Elena Vance. I was the chief forensic auditor assigned to the Vale Foundation.”
Camille tried to grab my arm, her face twisted in a feral mask of rage. “You deceitful little bitch! You hacked our servers!”
Lucian’s chief of security, Marco, stepped up onto the stage, smoothly positioning his broad frame between Camille and me, preventing her from taking another step.
“As you can see on the screen behind me,” I continued, looking directly at the news cameras positioned near the center aisle, “the Vale Charitable Foundation has operated for six years as a front for grand larceny, tax evasion, and political bribery totaling over forty-two million dollars.”

I pulled a small black USB drive from my evening clutch, holding it high in the air for all to see.
“The complete, unredacted files, along with bank tokens and forged donor signatures, have been delivered to the United States Attorney’s Office ten minutes ago.”
