Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of a Treason

Within twenty minutes, Room 412 was filled with the quiet, devastating presence of law enforcement. Two plainclothes detectives from the Cook County Special Investigations Division stood by the window, while a female officer carefully bagged the contents of Julianna’s spilled purse into clear evidence pouches.
Julianna sat slumped on the vinyl visitor's chair, her wrists cuffed behind her back, her makeup ruined by streams of black mascara, looking ten years older under the cold morning light. Her arrogance had withered into a whimpering, terrified silence.
The lead detective, a grizzled man named Miller with tired eyes, held up the burner phone in an evidence sleeve.
"It’s all here, Mr. Moretti," Detective Miller said, glancing down at Daniel, who was sitting on the floor with his back against the wall, his expensive suit rumpled, his face buried in his hands. "Your mistress didn't just buy a fake report. She paid eight thousand dollars to an orderly in our pathology department to photograph your wife's medical charts three weeks ago so she could copy the exact patient ID and clinic codes."
Daniel didn't lift his head. A low, wretched moan escaped his chest.
"Why?" Rachel asked. Her voice was steady now, clear and unbroken, cutting through the sterile room like a blade. She looked at Julianna. "Why would you go to such lengths?"
Julianna lifted her head, her swollen eyes flashing with one final, pathetic ember of spite. "Because he was never going to leave you, Rachel!" she hissed, her voice trembling with venomous jealousy. "He promised me for a year that he was going to file for divorce. But the moment you got pregnant with those damn triplets, he started talking about buying a nursery! He started talking about family dinners! He was slipping away from me!"
She spat toward the floor, her breath rattling in her throat.
"I knew Daniel," Julianna sobbed, glaring at the man sitting on the floor. "I knew his vanity. I knew his paranoia. I knew that if he thought another man had touched you, his pride would make him burn your entire life down before he ever stopped to ask a question. And I was right! He didn't even read the lab address! He saw zero percent, and he brought me here to watch you sign!"
Daniel flinched as if he had been struck with an iron rod. He looked up, his eyes bloodshot, streaming with tears, his jaw slack as he stared at the woman he had chosen over his family.
"You used me," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic rasp. "You made me... you made me abandon my own blood."
"You used yourself, Daniel," Dr. Harrison said coldly from the doorway, his arms crossed over his lab coat. "You were looking for an excuse to walk away from the heavy lifting of being a father to three fragile lives. She just handed you the match, and you gleefully set fire to your own house."
Detective Miller nodded to his partner. "Get her out of here. Book her on felony fraud and witness tampering. The State’s Attorney is going to have a field day with this."
The officers hauled Julianna to her feet. She wept hysterically, thrashing against their grip as they dragged her through the doorway, her heels dragging uselessly across the linoleum until the heavy corridor doors swung shut, swallowing her screams into the hospital hall.

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Only the soft, gentle snuffles of the three sleeping babies in their cribs remained, pure and untouched by the filth that had just been cleared from the room.
