Chapter 3 - The Documents on the Sheet

The word aren't hung in the air like a poisoned cloud.
Rachel felt the room tilt on its axis. The monitor tracking her postpartum vitals gave a rapid, agitated sequence of beeps as her pulse spiked into tachycardia. "What are you saying?" she pleaded, her hands trembling violently against the thin white cotton blanket covering her thighs. "Daniel, what are you talking about? We prayed for these babies. We went through three rounds of fertility medication. You held my hand when we saw the three heartbeats on the ultrasound! How can you say that?"
Daniel sneered, unbuttoning his suit jacket. From his breast pocket, he withdrew a folded sheaf of legal documents bound with blue backing paper, alongside a crisp, heavy white envelope bearing a red embossed laboratory seal.
With a flick of his wrist, he tossed both packets across the bed.
The heavy paper landed with a dull slap directly over Rachel’s bruised, bandaged lower abdomen. The sharp corner of the folder dug into the tender surgical site of her stitches, sending a hot flare of agony through her pelvis, but the physical pain was completely swallowed by the sheer horror unfolding before her eyes.
"Those are divorce papers," Daniel stated, his tone devoid of any human resonance. "Uncontested. Full dissolution of marriage. You walk away with your personal clothes and whatever cheap jewelry you brought into this house five years ago. You waive every single cent of alimony, spousal support, and any claim to the lakefront property."
Rachel stared down at the blue-backed document. In bold, stark lettering across the front page, the words stared back at her: IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS – PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.
Beside the legal petition lay the second document, half-spilled from its envelope. Across the top, stamped in dark blue ink, was a title that felt like a blow from an iron bar: ADVANCED GENETIC DIAGNOSTICS LABORATORY – COMPREHENSIVE PATERNITY PROFILE.
"Read it, Rachel," Daniel commanded, taking a single, intimidating step toward the foot of the bed. "Go ahead. Look at the numbers. While you were lying on our sofa pretending to be a frail, holy mother-to-be, I had prenatal cell-free fetal DNA pulled from your third-trimester blood draws. Zero percent probability. Zero."
Julianna leaned forward slightly, resting her designer bag on the polished edge of the visitor's side table, her diamonds catching the harsh fluorescent lights. "Did you really think you were clever enough to pin three bastard children on a partner at a top-tier brokerage, Rachel? You thought Daniel was just going to blindly foot the bill for your private indiscretions?"
May you like
"Indiscretions?" Rachel gasped, the air leaving her lungs in a ragged, broken sob. She pushed herself up on her elbows, the agony in her body screaming at the movement, but her eyes locked onto Daniel with incandescent, terrified fury. "I have never touched another man in my life! I haven't left our house without you or my mother in four months! Daniel, look at me! Look into my eyes! You know me!"
"I thought I did," Daniel spat, crossing his arms over his chest. "Turns out, I was just paying the mortgage while you were entertaining someone else. I’m not an idiot, Rachel. I’m not spending the next twenty years paying private school tuition and trust funds for another man's seed."
