Chapter 6 - The Commander

The relief commander stepped from the shade near the post, white gloves at his sides, face unreadable.

He looked first at Ethan’s boots.

Then at the soda can.

Then at Tyler’s raised phone.

Jonathan straightened immediately, rich-man confidence snapping into place.

“My son didn’t mean anything by it,” he said. “Let’s not turn this into a bigger issue.”

The commander did not answer.

He waited.

That waiting did more than shouting could have.

Ethan completed the movement. The formal sequence finished with a precision that made the disrespect around it feel even uglier. The crowd seemed to lean into silence. Tyler’s grin finally lowered into uncertainty.

Then the commander stopped in front of the Graysons.

He looked straight into Tyler’s camera.

“No. Keep that running.”

Tyler’s eyes widened.

Lauren’s hand fell from her mouth.

Jonathan’s expression hardened. “Excuse me?”

The commander ignored him.

He turned slightly toward Ethan, then raised one gloved hand toward the edge of Ethan’s cuff.

“I want every person watching to see the name engraved under this guard’s sleeve,” he said, “and to hear why Sergeant Ethan Caldwell requested this post on this exact day.”

The veteran near the front closed his eyes.

Ethan remained still.

But the muscle in his throat moved once.

This time, Tyler noticed.

For the first time, the boy looked at Ethan as a person instead of a prop.

And fear arrived too late to save him from understanding.
