Chapter 1 - Keep That Running

The soda can hit the marble near Sergeant Ethan Caldwell’s polished boots with a dull metallic crack.

Sticky soda burst across the black leather and splashed against the lower edge of his dress trousers. The crowd behind the rope barrier gasped as one. A woman covered her mouth. A Vietnam veteran near the front went perfectly still.

Ethan did not flinch.

He completed the step.

Turned.

And continued.

Ten feet away, Tyler Grayson held up his phone and laughed into the livestream.

“Dude can’t even react.”

His father, Jonathan, stepped forward in his tailored gray suit, irritation already replacing shame. “He’s thirteen. Don’t make a scene.”

Then the next set of ceremonial footsteps struck the stone.

Sharp.

Measured.

Unavoidable.

The relief commander entered from the shade in full dress uniform, white gloves bright in the Memorial Day sun. The crowd parted without being asked.

He stopped near Tyler’s phone.

Tyler’s grin twitched.

The commander looked directly into the camera.

“No. Keep that running.”

Tyler blinked.

His mother, Lauren, lowered the cemetery map in her hands, her face losing color as she finally understood this was not a harmless prank.

The commander lifted one gloved hand toward Ethan’s sleeve.

“Everyone watching should know why this guard requested this post today.”

The crowd fell into complete silence.

And Tyler lowered the phone like it had suddenly become too heavy to hold.
