Chapter 8 - The Mug Stayed Broken

Three months later, Skylar returned to the apartment alone.

The coffee stain had been removed from the floor, but she kept the broken mug in a sealed evidence bag until the criminal case no longer needed it. After that, she placed it in a drawer she rarely opened, not as a shrine to pain, but as a reminder of the exact morning she stopped negotiating with someone who believed violence was a form of leadership.

She changed the locks, repainted the kitchen, and moved the dining table closer to the window. The blue dinnerware stayed. So did the coffee maker from her first paycheck.

Suzanne’s salon never opened. The deposit failed, the landlord moved on, and her attempts to blame Skylar did not survive the bank records. Derek eventually accepted a plea related to the assault and unauthorized account access. The sentence did not erase what happened, but it placed his name beside the truth in a way he could not shout down.

Skylar’s scar healed better than expected. In certain light, a faint mark still traced the edge of her cheek. She stopped covering it for video meetings after a client once paused and asked, gently, whether she was safe.

“Yes,” Skylar said.

And for the first time in years, the answer was simple.

She had once believed leaving meant losing. Losing the marriage, the routine, the version of Derek everyone else liked, the family story people expected her to preserve. But the morning he threw coffee at her, Derek gave her one command.

Get out.

So she did.

She walked out to the hospital. She walked back with police. She walked into court with evidence. She walked into her own apartment after he was gone and realized she had not been thrown out of anything.

She had been released from a home where love had become a locked door.

The mug stayed broken.

Skylar did not.
