Chapter 2 - Family Money That Was Never His

The apartment was not large, but every inch of it had been earned by Skylar before marriage.
She bought it after eight years at a logistics company, saving bonuses, overtime pay, and holiday checks while her coworkers spent weekends in Key West and trips to the Bahamas. The place had white walls, pale wood floors, and windows that caught the morning light off Biscayne Bay if she stood in the right corner.
Derek had moved in two months after the wedding.
At first, he praised her discipline. Then, slowly, he began calling the apartment “our place” in a tone that erased the years she had paid for it alone. The bank account her paycheck entered became “household money.” Her designer bags, purchased one at a time after promotions or difficult years, became “extra things lying around.” Her boundaries became selfishness.
Suzanne helped him sharpen that language.
She never asked Derek for what he actually had. She asked him for what Skylar owned. Perfume. A television. Twelve thousand dollars “just for a week.” A nail technician course. A weekend girls’ trip. Each request arrived wrapped in family guilt.
Derek translated every refusal into cruelty.
“Stop being so cold.”
“She’s been through so much.”
“What’s the point of being married if you act single?”
Skylar tried explaining that generosity without repayment was not a loan. Derek called that accounting. She tried pointing out that Suzanne’s emergencies always came after failed shopping payments. Derek said family did not need receipts.
Then Skylar found three suspicious bank attempts connected to Suzanne’s email address. The amounts were small enough to look like testing: $499, $799, $1,200. The bank blocked them and called Skylar to verify.
She did not tell Derek right away.
She wanted proof before she accused his sister.

By the time the coffee hit her skin, proof no longer mattered as much as pattern. Suzanne did not simply want access to Skylar’s card. Derek had decided Skylar’s refusal was rebellion, and rebellion in his home deserved punishment.
That was the part Skylar finally stopped explaining away.
