Chapter 5 - The Cars in the Rain

The lead vehicle stopped beneath the mansion portico.

The rear door opened.

Evelyn Shaw stepped into the rain carrying a leather case.

She was seventy-one, silver-haired, and still moved with the same measured certainty she brought into courtrooms for forty years.

Behind her came licensed federal security contractors from Carter Protective Services.

No weapons were raised.

No one rushed the house.

They formed a controlled perimeter around the estate and secured the entrances while preserving the scene.

Adrian stared through the doorway.

“This is my property.”

I stood behind him.

“No. It belongs to the Carter trust.”

Celeste entered the hall.

“You cannot bring hired men into my son’s home.”

Evelyn crossed the threshold.

Her gaze moved first to my face.

Then to Adrian’s clenched hand.

Finally, to the stain on the marble.

“Mrs. Vale,” she said to me, “do you require medical assistance?”

“Yes.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“She fell.”

Evelyn did not look at him.

“Mr. Vale, do not interfere.”

His face hardened.

“You work for me.”

“I represent the controlling trust.”

“I control the trust.”

“Not anymore.”

She opened the leather case and removed several documents.

The audit confirmation.

The trustee resolution.

The reversion notice.

And an emergency court order preserving company assets and barring Adrian from accessing corporate systems.

The final clause had not merely taken away his authority.

It had documented the exact moment he lost it.
