Chapter 3 - The Twelve Million Dollars

The bank transfer appeared inside a quarterly report Adrian assumed I would never read.
Twelve million dollars had moved through three consulting firms within four days.
Each company had a different name.
All three used the same registered agent.
The money eventually reached a private account controlled by Vanessa Holt, Adrian’s communications director.
Vanessa was also his mistress.
I discovered the affair months earlier, but the transfer frightened me more.
Affairs destroyed marriages.
Shell companies destroyed employees, investors, and pension funds.
I printed the records and confronted Adrian in his study.
He did not deny the transfers.
He laughed.
“You went through my office?”
“Our office.”
The amusement left his face.
He closed the study door.
“You have no idea how this company operates.”
“I know twelve million dollars disappeared.”
“It was moved strategically.”
“To your mistress?”
His eyes changed.
He walked toward me slowly.
“Be careful.”
“About what?”
“About confusing ownership with competence.”
The insult might once have silenced me.
Instead, I placed the transfer record on his desk.
“Return the money and call the trustees.”
Adrian looked at the page.
Then at me.
The fist came without warning.
He believed fear would complete what isolation had begun.

He did not know the document on his desk was only a copy.
The original evidence had already left the house.
