Chapter 7 - The Briefing

Elena entered the operations room eleven minutes late, and every officer inside felt those minutes before she said a word. A digital map glowed on the center table, blurred to anyone without clearance. Patrol routes crossed terrain outside the wire. Red markers clustered near a dry riverbed locals called the Broken Wash.
Vale stood at the head of the room.
“Elena,” he said. “Begin.”
She did not waste time on introductions.
“Three local contractor movements were observed ahead of convoy incidents,” she said, plugging in the secure drive. “Not after. Before. Someone is patterning our patrol windows through supply traffic.”
A major leaned forward. “You’re saying the gate leak is internal?”
“I’m saying the enemy knows movement before patrols leave. The leak is either inside the gate process or piggybacking on it.”
The room changed.
Hollis stood near the back now, ordered to observe and remain silent. Each sentence from Elena struck him from a different angle. She had not been bypassing security because she thought she was above it. She had been trying to reach the briefing because the checkpoint itself might be part of the vulnerability.
She pulled up a sequence of time stamps. “This morning’s convoy was scheduled to move at 0640. At 0618, an unauthorized signal pinged off a contractor device near the approach road. If Convoy Delta leaves on time, they drive into a prepared choke point.”
Vale turned to his operations captain. “Hold Delta.”
The captain moved immediately.
Elena continued. “Reroute through Hill Track Two. Send decoy movement to Broken Wash. Sweep contractor devices at Gate One and Gate Three.”
Reed’s face appeared at the doorway, summoned for statement and technical context. His eyes moved once toward Hollis, then back to the map.
Vale looked at Hollis.
“You stopped the person bringing this?”
May you like
Hollis had no defense left.
“Yes, sir.”
