Chapter 1 - The Stairway

Elena Cross lost her balance on the metal stairway just as three Marines rushed after her.

Her shoulder struck the railing. Her canvas satchel swung open. Wind tore loose strands of dark hair across her face as one boot slipped against the grated step. For one breath, she tipped sideways over the rail, one arm thrown out into the cold morning air.

“Stop her!” Staff Sergeant Derek Hollis shouted.

Elena caught the railing with one hand.

The stairway clanged beneath her weight. Her ID card snapped loose from her collar and flipped in the wind, blurred and unreadable to most of the Marines watching from below.

Corporal Mason Reed saw only the color stripe.

His face drained.

“Staff Sergeant…”

Hollis ignored him and stepped down hard, blocking her path again. “No escort, no entry.”

Elena pulled in one sharp breath. She looked shaken, but not helpless. Not afraid the way Hollis wanted her to be.

“You just delayed the operations briefing,” she said.

A radio crackled on Hollis’s chest.

Colonel Adrian Vale’s voice cut through the static.

“Who stopped Dr. Cross at my gate?”

Every Marine on the stairway froze.

Then Colonel Vale appeared at the stairwell entrance, furious in the controlled way that made men straighten before he even spoke.

He looked at Hollis.

“That woman has theater-level clearance.”

Hollis went silent.

Elena pulled herself upright, bruised, dusty, and still holding the rail.

And the entire checkpoint realized the threat had never been her.

It had been the delay.
