Chapter 4 - The Shove

Nolan first ordered Erin to leave the serving line because he said she was blocking his Marines.

She was not.

The line was moving normally.

Erin asked whether there was a posted restriction.

That irritated him.

“I gave you an order.”

“You haven’t established the authority for one.”

Several nearby Marines looked down at their trays.

Nolan heard the challenge and saw an audience.

That combination always made him worse.

“Get out of line, sweetheart.”

Erin did not move.

Nolan stepped close enough for her to smell the coffee on his breath.

“This chow hall is for Marines, not little girls pretending to be soldiers.”

Erin’s expression remained still.

Her restraint looked like fear to him.

The shove came without warning.

It was not strong enough to cause serious injury.

That was deliberate.

Nolan knew how to humiliate someone while preserving the ability to call it harmless.

But Erin had spent years studying how authority failed before accidents occurred.

The shove was not an isolated act.

It was confirmation.

She caught the rail.

Saved the tray.

Regained her balance.

Then waited.

The room expected her to step away.

Instead, she made Nolan repeat himself.

When he reached for her again, she moved faster than he expected.

She did not strike him.

She did not grab him.

She simply removed the tray from between them and stood close enough to make one fact undeniable.

She was no longer participating in the performance he had designed.
