Chapter 2 - The Woman at the End of the Line

Erin arrived at Marine Corps Base Quantico before lunch wearing standard utility camouflage with no unnecessary decoration.

Her rank was visible.

Nolan simply did not bother looking closely.

She had entered through the administration building, signed in with the command duty officer, and spent the morning reviewing training records.

At noon, she walked to the chow hall alone.

That was part of the assignment.

Erin had been sent from the Inspector General’s evaluation team to examine complaints about leadership culture inside the installation’s advanced training detachment.

The official numbers looked excellent.

High completion rates.

Low reported injuries.

Almost no formal complaints.

That last number concerned headquarters.

Units filled with exhausted young Marines did not operate without conflict. A perfect record often meant problems were being solved well—or hidden efficiently.

Erin’s instructions were simple.

Observe ordinary interactions.

Avoid announcing the inspection to junior personnel.

Document what changed when leaders believed nobody important was watching.

She joined the lunch line behind several young Marines.

Nolan was standing near the coffee station, speaking loudly enough for the nearest tables to hear.

He mocked a private for dropping a fork.

Ordered another Marine to surrender his seat to a friend.

Then noticed Erin near the serving rail.

She was shorter than him.

Alone.

Not surrounded by aides or senior officers.

Nolan saw someone he could move.

He never asked her name.

He never checked her rank.

He merely decided she did not belong where she was standing.
