Chapter 1 - The Silver Tray

Mariana lifted the silver serving lid, and every face at the marble dining table changed.

There was no pasta underneath.

No bread.

No second bottle of wine.

Only blurred photographs, sealed legal papers, a flash drive, and a tablet lying neatly on the polished tray beneath the chandelier light.

Rodrigo stepped forward first, still wearing the confidence of a man who believed fear belonged to everyone but him.

“What the hell is this?”

Mariana stood beside the table in her white satin dress, one cheek marked from the slap he had given her twenty minutes earlier. Red wine had spilled across the marble, spreading slowly between crystal glasses and white flowers like the room itself had finally started bleeding truth.

She looked at him calmly.

“Dinner.”

His mother, Teresa, leaned forward. Her pearls shifted against her throat.

“Put that away,” she whispered.

Mariana slid one blurred photo across the table toward Rodrigo. “You should have checked the cameras.”

Across from him, Fernanda’s smug smile collapsed as she recognized the financial documents on the tray. Her wine glass tipped over, spilling red across the table.

Rodrigo reached toward the evidence.

Mariana did not step back.

“Touch it, and the prosecutor sees you live.”

The dining room doors opened behind them.

Mariana’s attorney walked in with two investigators.

Mariana finally let herself smile.

“Actually, they already have.”

Rodrigo’s confidence disappeared.

It was testifying against him.
