Chapter 3 - The Formation

Corporal Caleb Ross watched from formation and hated himself more with every inch Sarah moved. He had served beside her for only four months, long enough to know she was not weak, not careless, not dramatic. She cleaned her gear twice. Memorized procedures faster than most of the squad. Shared protein bars without making a show of it. Never complained unless there was a safety issue, and even then she made it sound like a question instead of an accusation.

That was why Vance hated her.

Not because she failed.

Because she kept passing without giving him the collapse he wanted.

Caleb chewed the end of an unlit toothpick until it splintered between his teeth. He wanted to break formation. He wanted to pull Vance off her. He wanted to do one brave thing and stop being another uniform standing still while someone was broken in public.

Then he saw his mother’s face in a hospital bed in Ohio. Chemotherapy. Insurance paperwork. His military benefits. The fragile chain holding her treatment together. Vance had destroyed careers for less than disobedience in formation. One black mark, one disciplinary note, one accusation of insubordination, and Caleb’s life could cave in far beyond Fort Bradley.

So he did the thing he would remember with shame for the rest of his life.

He looked at the horizon.

But he still heard Sarah’s breathing.

Wet. Ragged. Wrong.

Vance walked beside her, boots crunching slowly, the pacing stick resting against his shoulder.

“Look at her,” he called to the formation. “This is what happens when you think you’re a soldier. This is what happens when you don’t know your place.”

No one answered.

Sarah dragged herself another foot.

Caleb’s eyes burned.

He closed them.

A tear slipped out anyway.
