Chapter 6 - The Call

Ashley stepped back from the table. “This is insane. We were trying to help.”

“By changing the code?”

“We needed to make you understand.”

Linda’s voice came quietly from beside me. “Understand what?”

Ashley looked irritated, as if Linda had interrupted the wrong part of the script. “That this arrangement can’t continue forever.”

Linda nodded slowly. “You mean us living in our home.”

Ethan rubbed his face. “Mom, please. You’re making it sound cruel.”

I pulled out my phone and called our attorney, Denise Harper. I had hoped to speak with her the next morning. Ethan had moved the schedule forward.

She answered on the second ring.

“Tom?”

“Denise,” I said, putting the call on speaker. “Ethan changed the gate code today and prevented Linda from entering the house. Ashley was present. We’re inside now. I have the trust folder.”

There was a pause.

Then Denise’s voice sharpened. “Is Linda safe?”

“Yes.”

“Did they deny her access to medication or personal property?”

Linda looked at the grocery bag, then at Ethan.

“She had her heart medicine with her,” I said. “But she was locked outside for around forty minutes.”

Ethan snapped, “This is being exaggerated.”

Denise ignored him. “Tom, under the trust terms, this triggers an access violation and possible coercion review. Do you want me to proceed?”

Ethan’s face lost color.

Ashley whispered, “Ethan.”

I looked at my son.

He suddenly looked younger than thirty-two. Not sorry. Just scared.

“Yes,” I said. “Proceed.”

Denise’s voice stayed calm. “Change all secondary access permissions tonight. Preserve door logs if available. Do not allow them to remain in the home.”

Linda inhaled shakily.

Ethan stared at me. “You’re kicking us out?”

“No,” I said. “You did that to yourselves at the gate.”
