Chapter 4 - The Kitchen

When I walked Linda inside through the side entrance, Ethan looked shocked, not guilty. That told me how far gone he was. He was not upset that his mother had been standing outside like a stranger. He was upset that I had found a door he forgot to control.

Ashley was in the kitchen holding a tape measure. A notebook lay open on the counter beside paint samples and cabinet catalogs. On the table sat a folder with mortgage estimates, renovation plans, and a printed page from a real estate site showing our home’s value.

I looked at the wall she had been measuring.

Linda saw the papers and made a small sound.

Ethan stepped forward. “Dad, this is exactly why I said we need to talk. You and Mom are getting older. This house is too much for you. Ashley and I were trying to plan responsibly.”

“You locked your mother outside.”

He flinched at that, then recovered. “She was being emotional.”

Linda wiped her cheek. “I asked why the code changed.”

“You made a scene.”

“She was alone at the gate with medication in her bag,” I said.

Ashley lifted her chin. “We weren’t abandoning her. We were setting a boundary.”

I looked at her for a long moment.

“Boundary,” I said, “is a polite word for a locked gate when you’re the one holding the code.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened. “You don’t understand how much pressure we’re under.”

“No,” I said. “I understand exactly. You thought pressure would make us hand you the house before we were dead.”

The kitchen went silent.

There it was.

The truth on the counter between us, beside my wife’s milk and heart pills.
