Chapter 6 - What Blake Tried to Call a Mistake
Claire delivered two healthy babies at the hospital later that evening.
Ava arrived first.
Lucas followed six minutes later.
Neither needed intensive care.
Claire cried when the nurses placed them safely beside her.
Blake was not in the delivery room.
Claire had asked hospital staff to keep him outside.
When he tried to enter, security explained that being the husband did not override the patient’s wishes.
Diane accused Claire of punishing him during the birth of his own children.
Jenna, who had accompanied Claire to the hospital until an advocate arrived, answered before Claire had to.
“She is protecting herself after he ignored a medical emergency.”
The police investigation did not transform the afternoon into an exaggerated criminal spectacle. Officers interviewed everyone, documented the timeline, and referred the matter for review because Claire was physically unable to transport herself and had been left without assistance after clearly requesting emergency care.
Blake repeatedly called it a mistake.
Claire corrected him during one supervised conversation.
“A mistake is forgetting the hospital bag.”
He stared at the floor.
“You heard me ask for help. You looked at the bag. You took the keys and left.”
“My mother pressured me.”
“You chose her.”
“She would have made a scene.”
“I was in labor with twins.”
Blake began crying.
Claire felt grief, but not uncertainty.
His tears could not turn abandonment into confusion.
