Chapter 5 - The House They Returned To
EMS stabilized Claire in the living room while preparing transport.
She remained conscious. The babies’ heart rates were monitored, and the paramedics reassured her that help had arrived in time.
Two police officers entered after dispatch reported a vulnerable patient had been left without transportation despite documented medical instructions.
They did not make accusations.
They preserved facts.
One officer photographed the scattered forms after receiving permission.
Another spoke with Jenna and recorded when she found Claire, how she entered, and what condition Claire was in.
At 5:26 p.m., Blake’s car pulled into the driveway.
Diane entered first carrying several shopping bags.
She stopped when she saw the ambulance through the open door.
Blake ran inside.
Claire was sitting on the couch while Jenna tightened a blood-pressure cuff around her arm. One hand remained protectively over her stomach. An oxygen monitor rested on her finger.
Blake dropped beside her.
“Claire, I’m sorry.”
She looked at him through tears.
“I begged you to take me to the hospital.”
He lowered his head.
Diane covered her mouth.
Jenna looked sharply toward Blake.
“You left her alone in active labor?”
Diane stepped forward.
“It was only a quick shopping trip.”
Claire looked directly at her.
“My doctor wrote do not delay.”
An officer picked up the blurred medical folder from the table.
“Then everyone here needs to answer questions.”
The shopping bags slipped from Diane’s hand.

For the first time that day, the family understood Claire’s pain was no longer something they could explain away inside the house.
There were witnesses now.
