Chapter 5 - The Gate Started Closing

At 4:36, the front gate activated.

Mark looked toward the driveway as the motor began to hum.

A black SUV stopped outside the property, followed by a second vehicle from the private security company used by my trust.

No one rushed toward Mark.

No one needed to.

The security director called me.

“Do you authorize removal of unauthorized occupants?”

“I authorize preservation of the property. Give them time to collect personal belongings.”

Mark shouted upward.

“You called security on your husband?”

“I called security for my house.”

Linda clutched one of my dresses from the open suitcase.

“You cannot throw family into the street.”

“I didn’t throw anyone’s belongings out a window.”

Mark moved toward the front door.

The smart lock disengaged from his phone before he reached it.

His expression changed.

I had not locked him inside.

I had removed his administrative access to the security system.

The account belonged to my trust.

So did the gate controls, cameras, and property-management contract.

Mark looked up at me.

“Elena, stop this before it gets ugly.”

“It became ugly when my suitcase hit the lawn.”

His voice softened.

That was always his preferred weapon when arrogance failed.

“Come downstairs. We’ll discuss this privately.”

“You had privacy upstairs.”

Linda stepped forward.

“This is all because I took a bedroom?”

“No. The bedroom showed me what you both believed.”

Mark glanced toward the waiting vehicles.

He finally understood the thirty minutes were not a threat.

They were a courtesy.
