Chapter 3 - The Queen Mother Arrives

Linda took control in small steps.

The first morning, she moved my coffee machine because she preferred the counter uncluttered.

The second, she gave our housekeeper a new schedule without consulting me.

By the end of the week, my framed photographs had disappeared from the living room, replaced by pictures of Mark’s family.

She complained about my cooking.

Criticized my work hours.

Asked why a married woman needed a separate office with a lock.

Mark responded to each complaint as though resolving a conflict between two difficult roommates.

“Can you just let her have this?”

“She’s adjusting.”

“You know how she gets.”

The housekeeper eventually pulled me aside.

“Mrs. Hale keeps calling this her son’s property.”

“I know.”

“She told the gardener you may not be staying permanently.”

That evening, I confronted Mark.

He sighed.

“Mom talks dramatically.”

“Did you tell her I bought this house?”

“She knows we’re married.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

His face tightened.

“Why are you obsessed with ownership?”

Because ownership was the only reason I still had a door Linda could not legally close in my face.

But I did not say that.

I watched him.

He no longer referred to the house as ours.

He called it mine only when discussing bills.

He called it his when speaking to other people.

The master-bedroom takeover was not Linda’s idea alone.

It was a test.

Mark wanted to know whether I could be pushed from the most private room in my own home and still continue paying for everything beneath it.
