Chapter 5 - The Photograph He Should Not Have Sent
Victor expected the airport photograph to break Claire.
Instead, it identified four important facts.
His location.
His travel companion.
The bracelet purchased with diverted business funds.
And the suitcase he had carried from their house after transferring money from restricted accounts.
Claire forwarded the original message with its metadata to Rebecca.
Rebecca sent it to the federal agent supervising the case.
Within minutes, the bank activated court-authorized holds on the suspicious accounts.
Airline security received notice that Victor was associated with an active financial-fraud investigation.
His passport was not magically canceled.
It was flagged for examination because investigators had evidence of intended flight and questioned funds linked to the trip.
At the gate, Victor’s card stopped working.
Then Olivia’s did.
A private lounge employee asked them to speak with airport security.
That was when Victor called Claire.
She answered on the fourth attempt.
“What did you do?” he demanded.
Claire sat on the edge of the messy bed, holding his airport photograph on her phone.
“I let you send the proof yourself.”
“The accounts are frozen.”
“I know.”
“You cannot do that.”
“I didn’t. A court did.”
His breathing changed.
“They took my passport.”
“It’s being reviewed.”
“You planned this.”
“You planned it. I documented it.”
Olivia shouted something in the background.
Claire heard a security officer asking Victor to lower his voice.
She spoke one final sentence.
