Chapter 3 - The Receipt in His Coat
Claire discovered the affair six months before the airport photograph.
Victor came home late from what he called a lender dinner and left his coat across a chair.
Inside the pocket was a receipt from a jewelry store.
Diamond tennis bracelet.
Olivia Marsh.
The receipt included a delivery address Claire did not recognize.
She did not confront him.
Instead, she searched the monthly statements.
The bracelet had been purchased through a business credit line.
So had hotel rooms, airfare, and expensive dinners Claire never attended.
Then she found payments to Marsh Advisory Group, a shell company registered to Olivia’s brother.
The invoices described consulting services.
No services existed.
Over eighteen months, Victor moved more than eight hundred thousand dollars through the company.
Some returned to accounts he controlled.
Some funded Olivia’s apartment.
Some vanished through cryptocurrency exchanges and overseas transfers.
Claire wanted to believe there was another explanation.
Then she found a voice message Victor had accidentally synchronized to the shared home computer.
“Once I empty Claire out, she won’t have enough left to fight the divorce.”
Olivia laughed.
“What about the company?”
“She has no idea how any of it works without me.”
Claire listened twice.
