Chapter 9 - The Price of a Lesson

Parker was not dragged away like a movie villain.

Real accountability arrived in paperwork.

Formal statements.

Vehicle seizure for evidence review.

Insurance investigations.

A criminal-damage case.

Questions about the dark fluid beneath Lily’s car and whether his deliberate impact created a danger to the house.

Vanessa faced her own exposure for encouraging the act and helping construct the false account.

She stopped crying when she realized tears were no longer controlling the room.

Mark’s parents apologized that night.

Mark did not accept immediately.

His father said, “We were trying to protect the family.”

Mark looked toward Lily.

“She is the family.”

His mother began crying again.

This time, Mark did not comfort her.

Lily stood near the hatchback while the tow operator prepared to pull it away from the tree. She touched the damaged rear window near the SMALL STEPS STILL COUNT sticker.

“Can they fix it?” she asked.

Mark looked at the folded hood and damaged frame.

“I don’t know.”

She nodded.

“I wanted to drive it to graduation.”

“I know.”

“I don’t want them buying me another one.”

“They won’t.”

She looked at him.

“What happens now?”

“Now we tell the truth until it’s finished.”

Lily leaned against his shoulder.

For the first time since Mark arrived, her hands stopped shaking.
