Chapter 10 - Her First Car
The hatchback could not be repaired safely.
The insurance settlement covered part of its value. Ethan personally offered to pay the rest, but Lily refused anything that felt like hush money.
So he made a different offer.
He purchased the damaged car from the salvage company and had the rear window removed carefully before the vehicle was dismantled. Weeks later, he brought the glass to Lily with the sticker still attached.
SMALL STEPS STILL COUNT.
“I thought you might want to keep this,” he said.
Lily did.
Parker eventually entered a restitution agreement as part of his case. He sold the Mercedes. Part of the proceeds paid for Lily’s loss, driveway repairs, the damaged maple tree, and legal costs.
The rest did not disappear into another luxury car.
Ethan placed it into a restricted education account Parker could not access without meeting court and academic conditions.
Vanessa blamed everyone except herself until the dashcam audio was played during proceedings.
After that, she became quieter.
Mark’s relationship with his parents changed. They were allowed back into Lily’s life slowly, but apologies no longer erased choices. Trust had to be earned in small steps too.
The following spring, Lily arrived at graduation in another used hatchback.
She selected it herself.
She paid part of the cost from her savings and accepted the insurance money only after Mark reminded her that compensation was not charity.
The blue tassel hung from the mirror.
On the rear window, she placed the salvaged sticker.
After the ceremony, Mark found her standing beside the car while Noah took pictures.
“You okay?” he asked.
Lily smiled.
“I miss the old one.”
“I know.”
“But this one’s mine too.”
Across the parking lot, Mark’s parents watched quietly without making the moment about themselves.
Ethan stood farther back. Parker did not attend.
Lily climbed into the driver’s seat and started the engine.
The sound was ordinary.
That made it beautiful.
Vanessa and Parker had tried to turn two years of Lily’s work into a joke for the internet. They believed the damaged car would become another family incident everyone buried to protect the person with the most privilege.
They forgot the Mercedes had been watching.
