Chapter 7 - What Stayed Behind
Catherine did not fully board before her attorney called.
She answered on speaker just long enough for David to hear the facts, not the private details.
The condo title dispute had been corrected. David had signed away claims he never truly held because Catherine’s trust had owned the property through a structure he failed to understand. The SUV had been leased through a Whitmore entity. The accounts he assumed were marital had already been separated by court-approved agreement. His casual cruelty in mediation had been recorded and was now part of the custody file.
The girls were not “getting in the way” of his new life.
They were being protected from it.
David stared at her phone.
“You recorded me?”
“The mediator recorded the session,” Catherine said. “You were simply comfortable enough to be honest.”
Patricia began crying now.
“Catherine, we love the children.”
Emma, standing near the crew member, looked at her grandmother.
“You said girls don’t keep names.”
Patricia went silent.
Grace leaned against her sister.
Catherine’s face changed for one second, not into weakness, but into fierce maternal grief.
“That is why we are leaving.”
David looked at Emma and Grace as if seeing them only because Noah had made them relevant.
Catherine hated him a little for that.
Not enough to stay.
Allison took one step forward. “David, what about me?”
He turned toward her with something close to rage.
Catherine recognized that look. The man who needed someone else to blame when his own choices arrived with consequences.
“Do not make her your next excuse,” Catherine said.
David looked back at her.
“She lied to me.”
“And you humiliated your daughters before you knew that.”
The tarmac went silent.
A crew member gently asked if Catherine was ready.
She looked at Emma. Then Grace. Then Noah.
“Yes.”
This time, when she turned toward the jet, David did not call out.
