Chapter 3 - The Clinic Celebration

While Catherine’s car moved toward the private airport, David arrived at one of the city’s most exclusive maternity clinics with his parents, Megan, and Allison.

Allison Reed sat in the waiting room wearing a pale pink dress and a diamond bracelet David had once claimed was a “corporate appreciation gift.” She rested one manicured hand on her stomach, smiling as though the future had already been signed into her name.

David’s mother, Patricia, carried a tiny blue sweater in a gift bag.

His father, Richard, was already talking about family legacy.

Megan scrolled through baby furniture on her phone. “The nursery at the condo will need to be redone. Catherine had no taste.”

David smiled.

The condo had been part of the divorce settlement as far as he understood it. The SUV too. The furniture. The artwork. The life.

He had not noticed that Catherine gave him the keys too easily.

Dr. Harris entered with a polite smile and led them into the ultrasound suite. He was a careful man in his fifties with the measured voice of someone who understood that families often walked into medical rooms carrying fantasies, not facts.

Allison lay back as the nurse prepared the scan.

David stood beside her, chest lifted with pride.

“My son is healthy, right?” he said. “Look at him already. He’s going to be strong.”

Dr. Harris did not answer.

The probe moved once.

Then again.

His expression changed.

The cheerful energy in the room thinned instantly. Allison’s smile tightened. David’s mother stopped unfolding the blue sweater. Megan lowered her phone.

David frowned. “Doctor?”

Dr. Harris looked at the screen, then down at the records, then back at Allison.

“Allison,” he said carefully, “we need to clarify the timeline.”

Her face drained.

David’s hand slipped from her shoulder.

“What timeline?”

Dr. Harris folded his hands.

“I’m afraid there is something all of you need to understand before we go any further.”

Allison closed her eyes.

May you like

And in that single movement, David saw the truth arrive before the doctor finished speaking.

The baby was not his.
