Chapter 2 - Three Days of Silence

Grace had not planned to visit.
Maya stopped answering calls on Monday.
On Tuesday, she sent one short message.
Busy. I’m fine.
Grace recognized the wording.
It was the same phrase Maya used whenever she was trying to protect someone else from consequences.
By Thursday morning, Grace drove from Knoxville to the suburban Nashville home she had helped purchase before Maya’s wedding.
The house had originally been intended as a safety net.
Grace’s late husband left a modest investment portfolio, and she used part of it to purchase the property outright. The deed was placed solely in Maya’s name before she married Ethan.
Grace never advertised the decision.
She simply told her daughter, “No matter what happens in life, you will always have somewhere that belongs to you.”
After the wedding, Ethan began referring to it as their house.
Then his house.
Grace did not correct him because Maya never appeared bothered.
She had no idea Ethan had convinced her daughter otherwise.
Grace used the spare key Maya insisted she keep and entered through the side door.
The heater was running.
The kitchen window had been deliberately opened.
Maya’s winter robe hung over the back of a chair, close enough to reach but untouched.
The scene was too arranged to be accidental.

This was not a tired wife finishing dinner.
It was a punishment.
