Chapter 1 - Your House?

The first thing Grace noticed was not her daughter’s face.

It was her hands.

They were bright red beneath the icy water, trembling as Maya scrubbed a stack of dishes beside an open kitchen window. December air poured into the room, lifting the damp strands of hair stuck against her cheeks.

Maya stood barefoot on the cold tile in a soaked blue tank top and thin pajama pants.

Behind her, Ethan sat beneath the warm dining-room chandelier with his mother, Beatrice. Roasted chicken, wine, and Grace’s wedding china covered the table.

Beatrice held out another dirty plate.

“A good wife earns comfort through service.”

Ethan pointed toward the sink.

“She’s working. Stay out of my house.”

Grace stepped farther inside.

“Your house?”

The question drained some of the confidence from his face.

Maya turned fully.

“Mom?”

Grace saw the fading mark around her wrist and the fear that crossed her daughter’s eyes when Ethan shifted in his chair.

Beatrice gave a small laugh.

“What are you going to do? Call the police because she washed dishes?”

Grace raised her phone.

“I’m calling the owner.”

Ethan stood.

“Stop being dramatic.”

Grace looked directly at him.

“Maya owns this house. I put it in her name before the wedding.”

The room became silent except for the running water.

Beatrice slowly lowered the plate.

Maya stared at her mother as though she had been given back a truth someone had spent years taking away.
