Chapter 7 - Cage Nine Opens

Colonel Hale ordered the entire kennel operation frozen before the dogs were moved.

No one touched the collars.

No one changed a log.

No one entered the equipment room without witnesses.

Veterinary staff arrived first. Investigators followed. The handlers watched in stunned silence as unauthorized devices were removed from storage and photographed. Cage Nine’s records did not match Rex’s condition. Several training reports carried identical timestamps despite being filed on different days.

Miller tried to blame junior handlers.

That lasted until Sergeant Adams produced messages ordering staff to “clean up” the records before inspection.

Sarah stood beside Rex while the veterinarian checked him. The dog remained tense but allowed her hand near his harness.

“You remembered me,” she whispered.

Rex’s ears shifted.

Miller heard her.

“You think this makes you some kind of legend?”

Sarah looked over her shoulder.

“No.”

She had learned long ago that legends were often just damaged people whose survival made a better story than the cost.

“This makes me a witness.”

Colonel Hale stepped between them.

“Master Sergeant Miller, you are relieved of kennel authority pending investigation.”

Miller stared at him. “Over a whistle?”

“Over unsafe orders, falsified documentation, mistreatment allegations, and placing armed personnel in a preventable crisis.”

The distinction landed across the yard.

Sarah had not defeated Miller because she was secretly important.

She defeated him because his authority had stopped protecting anyone except himself.

As investigators escorted him toward the command building, he looked back at the K9 line.

All thirteen dogs remained calm.

Not because they feared Sarah.

Because they trusted the command.
