Chapter 1 - The Whistle

Master Sergeant Rick Miller forced Sarah Vance down onto the gravel just as the military K9 lunged forward and stopped short.

Dust exploded beneath her shoulder. The dog’s bark cracked across the training yard. Young handlers in camouflage turned with rifles raised but safely angled down, their faces caught between panic and confusion.

Sarah’s right hand tightened around a dented brass whistle.

Miller gripped the collar of her faded utility jumpsuit and shouted, “Shoot her now, she’s a fraud!”

Sarah twisted beneath his weight, bringing the whistle closer to her mouth.

“Lower your weapons.”

The handlers hesitated.

Miller pulled harder at her collar. “That dog doesn’t answer to you!”

Sarah blew one sharp note.

The sound cut through the barking, sirens, and grinding gravel.

The K9 stopped instantly.

Its body lowered. Its ears locked forward. Its eyes fixed on Sarah with absolute discipline.

The entire yard froze.

One handler stared at the dog and whispered, “That’s the old alpha recall.”

Miller’s grip loosened.

Sarah pushed herself up from the gravel, brass whistle still between her fingers. Dust streaked her face, but her eyes were steady.

“Every dog on this base learned my voice before they learned yours.”

A senior officer stepped into the yard behind Miller.

And the color drained from the Master Sergeant’s face.
