Chapter 4 - THE BUSINESS BEHIND THE LIE

Caleb owned a small collision-repair shop with his older cousin.
For most of our marriage, I believed the business survived because he worked long hours and knew how to negotiate with insurers. I handled the household accounts but stayed away from shop finances because he said business records were “too technical” and accused me of not trusting him whenever I asked questions.
Two months before the attack, a certified letter arrived while Caleb was away.
It concerned three insurance claims involving vehicles repaired at his shop.
The dates overlapped.
The drivers were connected to one another.
Damage photographs had been reused.
I asked Caleb about it.
He tore the letter from my hands and said an insurance company was refusing to pay legitimate work. Then he warned me never to open shop correspondence again.
After that, strange things began happening.
He asked for copies of my driver’s license.
He wanted me to sign blank vehicle-release forms.
He became interested in the coverage limits on our SUV.
One night, I heard him telling his cousin that “a real injury claim” would solve their cash-flow problem.
When I entered the room, both men stopped speaking.
The next morning, Caleb said they had been discussing a customer.
I wanted to believe him.
Belief was less frightening than asking why my husband needed a real injury.
The truth surfaced after Dr. Grant’s call.
Caleb’s repair shop had been under federal investigation for participating in a staged-collision ring. Damaged vehicles were moved between locations, photographed under different claim numbers, and billed through cooperating shops. Drivers received small payments. The businesses collected repair costs, towing fees, storage charges, and injury settlements.
Caleb was not a minor participant.
Investigators believed he coordinated several claims.
A sealed arrest warrant had been signed earlier that afternoon.
The task force had been trying to locate him.

Dr. Grant’s call did not create the warrant.
It told the marshals where Caleb was standing.
