Chapter 6 - The Order He Could Not Explain

Briggs faced the inquiry inside the base operations center.
His medals remained on his chest.
His authority did not.
The four-star officer placed the weather report from the night of the mission on the table.
“Visibility was eight miles.”
Briggs stared at the paper.
“Our regional assessment was different.”
“Wind speed was twelve knots.”
“There were other aviation concerns.”
“Name them.”
Briggs looked toward his attorney.
No answer came.
The officer placed the evacuation request beside the altered flight log.
“The nearest military helicopter unit reported available aircraft. Your office changed its status to grounded seventeen minutes before denying Commander Hayes.”
Briggs’s jaw tightened.
“That may have been a clerical entry.”
“Your access code authorized it.”
Silence settled across the room.
Then investigators produced messages between Briggs and a civilian defense broker.
One had been sent while Evelyn’s unit remained trapped.
Hold aviation until package is confirmed destroyed.
Briggs read the line without moving.
The arrogance finally left his face.
He was relieved of command immediately and detained pending formal charges involving obstruction, falsification of operational records, conspiracy, and conduct endangering military personnel.
As investigators escorted him through the operations center, he saw Evelyn standing near the doorway.
“You planned this,” he said.
“No.”
Her answer came without satisfaction.
“I planned to bring my team home.”
“You used those helicopters to humiliate me.”
“I used six helicopters in Syria.”
She glanced toward the runway.
“The other thirty-four came because they heard what you did.”
That distinction wounded him more than any insult could have.

Evelyn had not manufactured his collapse.
She had survived long enough for witnesses to arrive.
