Chapter 7 - THE ACCOUNT CHLOE NEVER SAW

Chloe met Marcus two days later.
Not Emma.
Grace attended.
Linda did too.
Emma stayed away but authorized them to review any records Chloe voluntarily provided.
The meeting lasted three hours.
Marcus called afterward.
“Your sister is in trouble.”
Emma said nothing.
“Financially?”
“Potentially.”
“Criminally?”
“I’m not a prosecutor.”
“Marcus.”
“She signed invoices she says were false.”
Emma closed her eyes.
“Then yes.”
“She claims Adam told her they were documentation for future joint property projects.”
“Did she know the money came from me?”
Silence.
“Marcus.”
“She knew it came from marital entities.”
That was enough.
Chloe knew.
Maybe not every detail.
Enough.
Marcus continued.
“However, she did show us something important.”
“What?”
A second checking account.
Opened in Chloe’s business name.
But created online by Adam using credentials Chloe had given him.
Statements were paperless.
The contact email belonged to Adam.
Chloe claimed she never knew the account existed.
Money flowed from the primary C. Bennett Interiors account into the second.
Then outward.
“Where?”
Marcus said:
“An escrow company.”
Emma froze.
“For what?”
“A condominium.”
“Whose?”
“Technically an LLC.”
“Which LLC?”
“Hawthorne Residential Partners.”
Emma had never heard of it.
Ownership records showed two members.
Adam Walker.
Chloe Bennett.
Emma almost dropped the phone.
“They bought property together?”
“Apparently.”
“When?”
“Seven months ago.”
“How much?”
“Purchase price: $410,000.”
Emma sat completely still.
A condominium.
Not some distant future plan.
Not someday.
A real property.
Purchased while Adam came home to Emma every night.
“How much cash went into it?”
“About $122,000.”
“From our accounts?”
“Looks like a substantial portion originated there.”
Emma felt dizzy.
“Does Chloe own half?”
Marcus paused.
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
The operating agreement showed Adam held eighty percent.
Chloe held twenty.
But Chloe had been told verbally, according to her messages, that they were equal partners.
Adam controlled the LLC.
Adam controlled sale authority.
Adam controlled distributions.
Chloe had signed without reading carefully.
Emma stared at the wall.
Adam had used Chloe.
That did not make Chloe innocent.
But it exposed something uglier.
He had convinced his mistress they were building a shared future using money partially taken from his wife.
Then legally structured that future so he controlled almost everything.
Grace called twenty minutes later.
“Chloe’s losing it.”
Emma said nothing.
“She genuinely thought the condo was half hers.”
Emma felt no pleasure.
Only exhaustion.
Grace continued.
“There’s more.”
“Of course there is.”
“The condo is currently listed for sale.”
Emma stood.
“What?”
“Listed yesterday.”
“By Adam?”
“Yes.”
“He’s trying to liquidate it.”
“Yes.”
“And where would the proceeds go?”
“An account controlled by the LLC.”
“Which Adam controls.”
“Yes.”
Emma understood his suitcase.

He wasn’t running from an affair confrontation.
He was racing to finish moving the money.
