Chapter 13 - THE FIRST FAMILY HOLIDAY

Thanksgiving was the real test.
Linda invited both daughters.
Emma initially refused.
Then changed her mind.
Not for Chloe.
For herself.
She did not want every future holiday organized around avoiding one person.
But there were conditions.
No forced reconciliation.
No seating manipulation.
No family speech about forgiveness.
No photographs requiring Emma and Chloe to stand together.
Linda agreed.
Chloe arrived early.
Emma arrived later.
They said hello.
Nothing more.
It felt strange.
Also manageable.
During dinner, an uncle nearly asked about Adam.
Linda kicked him under the table.
Emma saw.
Almost laughed.
After dessert, Chloe helped clear dishes.
Emma stood at the sink.
For a moment they were alone.
Chloe handed her a plate.
“Here.”
Emma took it.
“Thanks.”
That was all.
Then Chloe said:
“Mom told me you got promoted.”
Emma had.
Her architectural firm made her regional project director.
“Yeah.”
“Congratulations.”
“Thank you.”
No jealousy.
No comparison.
No hidden husband.
Ordinary conversation.
Emma almost forgot what extraordinary effort ordinary now required.
Later Linda asked both daughters to come outside.
Emma tensed.
Linda pointed toward the old patio table.
The same one from the birthday party.
“I’m replacing it.”
Emma stared.
“Why?”
Linda looked embarrassed.
“Every time I see it, I remember that phone landing there.”
Chloe looked down.
Emma smiled sadly.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“It’s a table.”
Linda’s eyes filled.
Emma continued.
“You don’t have to throw away furniture because terrible things happened near it.”
Linda laughed through tears.
Chloe did too.
Emma looked at her sister.
For the first time in months, they shared the same small joke.
