Chapter 6 - The Newport Investigation

Cordelia didn't return to Boston that night. Instead, she checked into a private bungalow at the Rosewood Hotel in Menlo Park and summoned her personal private investigator—a former FBI agent named Arthur Vance whom she had kept on retainer for thirty years.

By 4:00 PM, Arthur had delivered a red leather folder to her suite.

While Charles was preparing for a multi-million-dollar wedding gala at the Stanhope estate in Newport, Rhode Island, Arthur had conducted a discreet forensic audit of Phoebe Bennett’s personal and professional activities over the preceding two years.

The findings were devastating.

Phoebe had not merely been Charles’s communications director. Eighteen months prior, she had entered into a quiet, undisclosed relationship with Julian Vance—Charles’s ambitious thirty-four-year-old cousin who managed the firm’s European hotel properties from London.

Julian had been attempting to force a board takeover of Stanhope Hospitality for five years, claiming that Charles’s lack of a direct heir made his leadership a long-term liability for institutional investors.

Phoebe’s pregnancy wasn't an accident. It was a calculated, brilliant political execution.

Julian had fathered the twins. Phoebe had manipulated Charles’s profound insecurity regarding his fertility—convincing him through fabricated medical disclosures that a "miracle natural conception" had occurred during an off-site corporate retreat in Miami.

Charles, desperate to prove his manhood to his mother and secure his legacy, had swallowed the lie whole.

He had handed Phoebe my ring, my anniversary pin, a board seat, and a $50 million divorce settlement to clear the way for their marriage.

Cordelia sat in her hotel suite staring at the surveillance photographs provided by Arthur—photographs of Phoebe meeting Julian at a secluded bistro in Manhattan just three weeks earlier, receiving a wire transfer confirmation slip into an offshore trust account in the Cayman Islands.

At 7:00 PM, Cordelia called my cell phone.

"I need you to come to Newport, Hannah," Cordelia said, her tone devoid of its former arrogance, replaced by a hollow, desperate plea.

"I am no longer a Stanhope, Cordelia," I replied from Clara’s kitchen. "My bags are unpacked in Palo Alto."

"He is going to marry her on Saturday in front of three hundred shareholders," Cordelia cried out, her voice breaking. "If this becomes public after the wedding, the board will strip the family of its voting control! Julian will take the empire!"

"Then I suggest you talk to your son," I said softly, and hung up.
